The structure comprises an in-situ concrete frame built on piled foundations, and a steel trussed rafter roof. The striking external façade was constructed from pre-cast concrete cladding panels, specially imported from Holland. The panels become progressively wider along the side elevation to maintain a uniform perspective to the building when viewed from the front.

Internally, the building houses an exhibition space, multi-media lab, library, photographic archive, interactive space, meeting room, café and bar.

Access to the site was very restricted as the footprint of this four-storey building occupied the entire site area, with adjacent buildings on two elevations
and Shoreditch Town Hall located on the opposite side of the narrow cobbled access road.
